First glance, ok, it’s different, but how? I know there’s a spare tire well down there...

My question is why only half of the well and not the whole thing since it would have been easier.

Why didn’t they weld in a y-pipe behind the well, and then route the exhaust around it and tuck the tailpipes right up in the bumper to give it a center-exit exhuast?

That is one of many questions you could ask about this. Maybe because the battery is in the right side of the trunk, but with this kind of determination anything is possible.

Straight-pipe, bro! But not, because it still has the factory resonator ahead of the axle.

I saw a guy who hacked an F-body Camaro muffler under the back of his E46 to do just that, no joke.

But they could have done a muffle delete without whatever the hell you call that kind of fuckery.

That’s awful. I am imagining all the shit collecting on that shelf they left there.

Also rust. So much rust.

My question is, why do it at all? The manufacturer spends millions to engineer the exhaust. Leave it alone.

Clearly, you are not a true enthusiast, because you do not understand that the stock muffler leaves 50 horsepowers on the table and many torques. After all, the only difference between this 528i and an M5 is an M, a 28i, and the rear muffler, and the badges are already gone so basically this is an M5 now.

50 more horsepower means that other components on the car will be stressed, possibly beyond their limits. I am a fan of stock - if you want to make mods, you have to consider what they will do to the rest of the car. And, if you still have a warranty, whether the mods will void it.

My previous post was sarcasm, for what it’s worth. I’m also a fan of stock, and thoughtful, well considered modifications. Not this kind of thing. There was a time when I wanted to just modify everything’s nuts off, but I still had a balanced perspective. Brakes and suspension before power, that kind of thing.

Ghettotastic! The sheet metal screws just ooze superior craftsmanship.

Because exhaust gas slows down through bends, obviously. Straighter pipe means freer flow and MOAR POWER!!1!!! /S

See, that's legit because the exhaust runs right up the center between the spare well and the fuel tank. Fitting non-oem mufflers is hard, it's a tight fit in there.
